Folks,
Here are the *updated* steps to build a DevOP core w10 w/xfce4 desktop:
Here is a good video outlining what you can do with WSL and what these steps outlined - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J-dRirlUvY . It’s going to be on all Windows 10 machines by Fall I read somewhere. This will be a huge win for developers allowing unity and uniform VM’s take up too much resources and are not accessible from Microsoft sccm like this on allows. “WSL requires fewer resources (CPU, memory, and storage) than a full virtual machine.“ https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/faq
My Steps:
1.) Get new haswell hardware (hp 600 g2’s)
2.) Update cwdb (work with support team to have them change it)
3.) Install win10 core 64 bit offering
4.) Login and start the steps
5.) goto ninite.com from ie, I select all (do not know why edge is watchdog killed on 1703) browsers, 7zip, notepad++, filezilla, imgburn, jre, air, eclipse, visial studio and then select run (or save then run)
6.) Open powershell prompt to flip developer mode (still needed for some reason) on by using this powershell script @ https://stackoverflow.com/questions/40033608/enable-windows-10-developer-mode-programmatically (copy and paste the seven line script into notepad++ after and save it as devmode.ps1 and run from ‘administrator’ powershell (the days of the msdos cmdline shell are over it seems…)
6.) Next run this command in the same powershell admin window “Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux” (this will configure wsl) it then restart your box as outlined in https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/install_guide once completed restart machine.
7.) Then install https://sourceforge.net/projects/vcxsrv/ configure it to handle the windows as you like (one screen or free standing apps) (pin xlaunch to your taskbar, same with bash from startmenu)
8.) From admin cmd prompt type “bash” you should see: (this will install 16.04)
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]
(c) 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Users\donofrio>bash
-- Beta feature --
This will install Ubuntu on Windows, distributed by Canonical
and licensed under its terms available here:
https://aka.ms/uowterms
Type "y" to continue:
9.) from bash prompt type (copy and paste) echo "export DISPLAY=:0.0" >> ~/.bashrc
10.) I like xfce4 so I do an “sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-appfinder xfce4-battery-plugin xfce4-clipman xfce4-clipman-plugin xfce4-cpufreq-plugin xfce4-cpugraph-plugin xfce4-datetime-plugin xfce4-dev-tools xfce4-dict xfce4-diskperf-plugin xfce4-eyes-plugin xfce4-fsguard-plugin xfce4-genmon-plugin xfce4-goodies xfce4-hdaps xfce4-indicator-plugin xfce4-linelight-plugin xfce4-mailwatch-plugin xfce4-messenger-plugin xfce4-mount-plugin xfce4-mpc-plugin xfce4-netload-plugin xfce4-notes xfce4-notes-plugin xfce4-notifyd xfce4-panel xfce4-panel-dev xfce4-places-plugin xfce4-power-manager xfce4-power-manager-data xfce4-power-manager-plugins xfce4-quicklauncher-plugin xfce4-radio-plugin xfce4-screenshooter xfce4-screenshooter-plugin xfce4-sensors-plugin xfce4-session xfce4-session-dbg xfce4-settings xfce4-smartbookmark-plugin xfce4-systemload-plugin xfce4-taskmanager xfce4-terminal xfce4-time-out-plugin xfce4-timer-plugin xfce4-verve-plugin xfce4-volumed xfce4-wavelan-plugin xfce4-weather-plugin xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin xfce4-wmdock-plugin xfce4-xkb-plugin hexchat remmina remmina-plugin-rdp firefox –y” (keep in mind copy and paste from outlook seems to strip “-“ away
11.) for 17.04 edit using terminal inside or outside xlaunch, sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list change the references to “zesty” (project name for 17.04 ubuntu), save the file then exit. finnaly in sudo type “apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y && apt-get dist-upgrade -y && apt-get autoremove -y && apt-get autoclean -y && sync && sync” (without quotes) wait 5 min and when returns to bash prompt exit and start bash back up.
12.) then startxfce4 (with xlaunch running – needed for X11GUI)
13.) configure xfce gui as outlined (at least this is how I like it)
a.) Accept default config
b.) Remove bottom panel (no need for it) (right click on panel select remove or “panel properties” then remove “panel 2”
c.) Add whisker menu (app menu has bugs/issues)
d.) I put two menus’s one on each side of the panel (so I’m not moving mouse everywhere)
e.) Ok now xfce panel start menu, click the slider icon that says All settings
f.) Font’s I myself want everything two font sizes bigger like ‘default font size’ set that to 12 (get used to clicking that “All Settings” botton at the bottom near close in settings….
g.) Panel (remove #2 not needed) #1 adjust appearance select style “Solid Color” then click the black box and type in “darkgrey” (where it says #242424) (should say #A9A9A9) this makes the different items on the panel easily visible, then close.
h.) Disable screensaver (no need for that)
i.) Window manager, style, title font, up the font…I use 11 here,
j.) Workspaces – yah I use 10 “lol”
k.) Session and startup, check to remember apps, and placement on logout…..
l.) I add a launcher to the panel added application xfce-terminal item to the panel, so I can open windows to required size….—geometry=153x43 (or what you like)
m.) Xfce4 terminal – preferences set buffer to 10000, font two bigger, color preset/theme green on black.
14.) My desktop’s look like this when I do my “Daily Driver” as I call it looks like this https://1drv.ms/f/s!AsBlZbBf72iNm54HRrGo_Wa3BUs1pw if you have any questions I’m here for you.
You can switch to RedHat or OpenSUSE as needed using this script - https://github.com/RoliSoft/WSL-Distribution-Switcher
Oh your home directory is /mnt/c/Users/uniqname = w10 homedir
